Rome
Background
Origins
Rome became the city center of the fledgling Kingdom of Rome due to its defensive location near seven hills as well as being located near freshwater at the Tiber River. The city itself was inland away from the sea but the river allowed easy navigation for trade and commerce. Surrounding the city was a rich agricultural region that was sheltered in by many hills.
As Roman legends go the city was founded by Romulus and Remus in 753 BCE/BC. One of the worst atrocities that early Rome committed to gain women was known as the rape of the Sabine women. Overall the early period of the development of Rome is not very well known to archaeologists.
