Roman Bridges

Background

The first stone bridge built by the Romans is the Pons Ameilius which was constructed in 179 BC. Eventually Roman bridges would build massive bridges throughout their empire such as the Ponte d'Augusto which contained four arches and spans 31.2 meters or the Severan Bridge which was a single arch that spanned 34.2 meters.

The Romans were the world's first major bridge builders.[1] The following list constitutes an attempt to list all known surviving remains of Roman bridges.A Roman bridge in the sense of this article includes any of these features:Roman archesRoman pillarsRoman foundationsRoman abutmentsRoman roadwayRoman cutwatersAlso listed are bridges which feature substantially Roman material (spolia), as long as the later bridge is erected on the site of a Roman precursor. Finally, incidences where only inscriptions lay testimony to a former Roman bridge are also included. In the following, bridges are classified either according to their material or their function. Most data not otherwise marked comes from O’Connor's Roman Bridges which lists 330 stone bridges for traffic, 34 timber bridges and 54 aqueduct bridges.[2] An even larger compilation of more than 900 Roman bridges (as of 2011) is offered by the Italian scholar Galliazzo, which is used here only selectively.[3]Note: the table columns are sortable by clicking the header, e.g. for country of origin etc.Contents [hide]1Note on classification2Masonry bridges3Timber and stone pillar bridges4Pontoon bridges5Aqueduct bridges6See also7References8Sources9Further reading10External linksNote on classification[edit]Bridges are particularly difficult to classify as they, more than other structures, are subject to wear, on account of war and the impact of natural elements. The constant need for repairs through the ages has often turned bridges into hybrid structures, making it often difficult or nearly impossible to determine the exact date and origin of individual parts of a bridge. Thus, the majority of bridges listed below can be assumed to include medieval or (early) modern modifications, replacements or extensions, to a small or large extent.Masonry bridges[edit]The following table lists bridges made out of stone or brick. The vast majority features arches, although stone deck slabs were also known. Bridges' spans and height abbreviations: S = small, M = middle, L = large.ImageNameRiverTownLocationCountrySpansHeightCommentAesepus Bridge around 1905/06Aesepus BridgeGönen Çayı(Aesepus)Cyzicus3.5 mi above mouthTurkey11 x S-M?Ain Diwar 1.jpgAin Diwar Bridgeformerly crossed the TigrisAin Diwar3.5 km NE of Ain DiwarSyria? In ruins, one span remaining.Alcántara BridgeAlcántara BridgeTagusAlcántara?Spain13.8 m; 21.9 m; 28.8 m; 27.4 m; 21.9 m; 13.8 mLSpan no. 3Alconétar BridgeTagusAlconétarNow 6 km NSpain16 x 7.3–15 mMSegmental arch bridge[4]Alte Sauerbrücke viewed from Echternach bankAlte SauerbrückeSauerEchternach?Luxembourg/Germany??Roman origin unclearArapsu BridgeArapsu BridgeArapsuOlbiaAntalya-ArapsuyuTurkey1 x SSAsi bridge?Antakya?Turkey4 x 10 mSRoman bridge of ÁvilaÁvila BridgeAdajaÁvila?Spain?M?Band-e KaisarBand-e KaisarKarunShushtar?Iranc. 40 x MMEasternmost Roman bridge[5]Bridge at AfrinBridge at AfrinAfrinAleppo1 km E of CyrrhusSyria11.5 m; 12.5 m; 12 mMBridge at Eski Mosul?Eski Mosul?Iraqc. 15 mM4th arch south sideBridge at LimyraAlakır ÇayıLimyra7.5 km NE of FinikeTurkey27 x c. 10.65 mSSegmental arch bridge[6]Bridge at MaamelteinMaamelteinBeirut18 km NELebanon12 mSBridge at NimrehWadi al-LiwaShahba10 km SE from ShahbaSyria6.73 mSTransversal arch[7]Oberzeiring - Römerbrücke an der Römerstraße zwischen Ober- und Unterzeiring.jpgBridge at OberzeiringBlahbachOberzeiring20 km NW of JudenbergAustria1 or 2 x SSBridge at OinoandaKoca Çayı(Xanthos river)OinoandaAt foot of town hillTurkey??Excavated inscription points at existence[8]BaibarsBridge20.JPGJisr JindasNahal AyalonLod35 km NW of JerusalemIsrael?Only the foundations are of Roman constructionCinque Ponti?Salona7 km NE of SplitCroatia2 x SSCloaca di Porta San ClementinoMartaGraviscaeNear Tarquinia on Via AureliaItaly, Central1 x SSConstantine's BridgeAdırnas Çayı(Rhyndacus)Ulubad(Lopadium)Turkey? In ruins. Strictly speaking, many bridges of the second type should be rather called "concrete pillar bridges", as the Romans preferably used opus caementicium for constructing their bridge piers (stone was confined in these cases to covering). Both types, timber bridges and stone respectively concrete pillar bridges, are listed here in the same category as historically, with the consolidation of Roman power in the newly conquered provinces, wooden bridges often gave way to solid pillar bridges.ImageNameRiverTownCountrySpansCommentRelief on Trajan's ColumnApollodorus Bridge(or Trajan's Bridge)DanubeTurnu-Severin/KladovoRomania/Serbia21 x >30 mConcrete pillars; longest arch bridge for over 1000 yearsCaesar's Rhine Bridge, by John Soane (1814)Caesar's Rhine bridgesRhineKoblenzGermanyc. 26 spansChesters BridgeNorth TyneChestersEngland4 x SPossible stone arches[23]Constantine's BridgeDanubeCorabiaRomania/Bulgaria?Concrete pillars[24]Cornelius Fuscus's BridgeDanubeOrleaRomania/Bulgaria?Timber bridge[25]Justinian's bridgeSiberisSykeonTurkey8 x 5.4-9.6 mLondon BridgeThamesLondonEngland?Piercebridge Roman BridgeTeesPiercebridgeEngland?Pons AeliusTyneNewcastleEngland?Drawing from 1881Pons SubliciusTiberRomeItaly?Pons TirenusGariglianoMinturnaeItaly?Römerbrücke at TrierRömerbrückeMoselTrierGermany?Arches added in Middle AgesFanciful depiction from 1608. They usually consisted of boats lashed together, with the bows pointing towards the current. Permanent bridges of boats were also commonly set up for civilian traffic.CharacterRiverTownCountryCommentBridge of boatsDanubeKostolacSerbiaBridge of boatsDanubeTurnu-SeverinRomania/SerbiaBridge of boatsSakarya(Sangarius)Adapazarı, 4 km SWTurkeyReplaced by stone arches of Sangarius Bridge under reign of Justinian I (r. 527-565)[28]Aqueduct bridges[edit]See also List of aqueducts in the Roman Empire.ImageDestination (Town)NameCountryBridge lengthAqueduct length overallCommentAix-en-Provence?France??Alabanda?Turkey?Alatri?Italy??Alcanadre?Spain?Alinda?Turkey?Almuñécar?Spain?Ansignan?France?Antibes aquaduct.jpgAntibesLa BouillideFrance?AntibesLa FontveilleFrance?Antioch?Turkey?Anzio?Italy??Pont d'Aël - Gesamt 1.jpgAostaPont d'AëlItaly?Barbegal aqueduct 23.jpgArlesBarbegal, FontveilleFrance?Aspendos Aquaedukt.jpgAspendus?Turkey?Athens, Hadrianic aqueductGreece?Hadrianic aqueduct, Remains of water bridge in Nea Ionia, Athens (14046482411).jpgAthens, Nea IoniaLate Roman aqueductGreece?Barcelona?Spain?Bavay?France??Baelo-Claudia?Spain??Zbaydeh-Mansourieh.jpgBeirutAqueduct of Zubaida, MansouriehLebanon?20 kmBologna?Italy??BonnBonn AqueductGermany?Bordeaux?France??Cádiz?Spain??Caesarea Maritima aqueduct.jpgCaesarea?Israel?Zaghouan aqueduc.jpgCarthageZaghouan-CarthageTunisia?Acquedotto romano Valcorrente2Catania?Italy??Peña Cortada 5.JPGChelvaPeña CortadaSpain??Chemtou?Tunisia??Cherchell?Algeria?Cimiez?France??Civitavecchia?Italy?Reconstructed section near Mechernich-VussemCologneEifel AqueductGermany130 kmLargest ancient structure north of the AlpesConstantine?Algeria?Die?France??An aqueduct near Ephesus.
