Roman Legions > Legio I Isaura Sagittaria
Legio I Isaura Sagittaria
Background
The Legio I Isaura Sagitaria was known as a pseudocomitatensis Roman legion and was used throughout ancient times up until the reign of Diocletian. It was believed to have been present under Marcus Aurelius Probus. Given the name this legion may have been a military unit of archers which was unique for the Roman military.
According to Notitia Dignitatum in the start of the 5th century BC the Legio I Isaura Sagitaria was under the authority of the Magister Militum per Orientem and that this legion was used to defend the Isauria region of the Roman Empire. This legion was joined together by the Legio II Isaura, and the Legio I Isaura.
